       Her
Look, I'll save you some time. Here's
what's going to happen: you're
going to fall in love with me.
I'll be really good for you.
And when you're the best you've
ever been, you'll leave me. And
it will almost destroy me.

Him
That's no way to speak to someone
you just met.

Her
We've met before. Thousands of times.
You don't remember.

Him
Maybe it's just your ending
that I don't remember.

Her
I do. I've done it before.

Him
Then why would you do it again?

Her
It's what I do.

Him
Then this time do it different.

Her
It's not my choice to make.

Him
Well that make you beautiful and
fragile and tragic. And wrong.
It doesn't end like that.
(Turns his back on her and walks away)
Not if it doesn't start.
(Louder)
See? I do. I have a choice.
Her
No, you don't. Not unless you
walk away right now, and never
ever come back.

Him
(Shouts back)
I already did. It was nice never
knowing you. This is the part
where you never see me again.

He is already at the bend in the ridge on the trail going down. He goes round it, disappearing from sight. She looks down at the ground and closes her eyes. Tears fall. She's standing alone now at the top of the trail.

Her (O/S)
But you're not going to.
You already made your choice.

Minutes pass. Her face is soaking wet from tears and rain. The rain falls harder. We hear footsteps up the trail. He reappears. He stands opposite her and places his hands on her shoulders as if he's going to shake her. But he doesn't.

Him
Who are you? What is this?

Her
It's what we came to do.
